Water Pressure Regulators

4/26/2018 (Permalink)

 : Water Pressure Regulators

A water pressure regulator is a control valve that reduces the water pressure in your home and business, to a usable and safe level, for daily use.

A household water pressure regulator reduces the water pressure from the water main to a pressure that is usable for your home and business.  Low pressure from one of the faucets in your home may be due to mineral deposits from hard water. Hard water can clog the aerators on faucets and it also prevents pressure surges from the household plumbing from the public main. High water pressure can result in dripping faucets and water pipes, and it can damage appliances. Water pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). Normal water pressure is typically between 30 and 80 PSI.

Allergies In The Southwest

4/24/2018 (Permalink)

The Change In Seasons In   The Southwest And How it   Affects Allergies.

With beautiful spring weather comes flowering trees and desert plants. The Southwest features a semi-arid to arid climate, depending on the location. Much of the Southwest is an arid desert climate, with some higher elevations. You may wonder why it's so windy during the months of March, April, and May. This time of year allergies seem to increase a lot. The weather is caught in a tug-of-war with a atmospheric instability caused by the increasing strong sunshine. Wind pollinated plants produce comparatively huge quantities of pollen that become airborne easily, and can travel 20 miles or more on a windy day.  Therefore most of the pollen found in air samples is derived from plants pollinated by wind. In the southwest there are many species that are native to the region and many introduced species.

Mohave County is full of vacation homes, second homes, rentals, and summer or winter visitors. Because so many people are coming and going, there is a myriad of homes that are unattended, from days to months at a time.  SERVPRO strongly recommends that you have somebody that you can trust, that will check on your house weekly, or once a month. Because you can't see most of the water plumbing in your home, chances are, you may not always know you have a leak until it is to late.  Some of the water damaged homes have been running for days,  to weeks before the leak is detected.  One of the best ways to protect your home is to have somebody that is familiar with the areas of the home where most  leaks come from.  Excessive water pressure, extreme temperature changes, and clogging of pipes caused from hard water damage, are some of the reasons for water damages to homes. We suggest that you have a plumber change out your pressure regulators every two years and conduct an inspection inside the property regularly.

Mohave County's Hard Water

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Hard Water is water that has a high mineral content. Hard Water is formed when water moves through deposits of limestone and chalk which are largely made up of calcium and magnesium carbonates and trace metals.

In time hard water can damage water pipes by scale buildup, from long term movement of hard water. Which gradually results in less water moving through the pipe and a lowering of water pressure. When hard water is heated, like in the heat of the day, or your water heater, solid deposits of calcium carbonate can form. This can reduce the life of your plumbing. It can also raise the costs of heating the water, lower the efficiency of electric water heaters, and clog pipes. Water pipes can run all through your house and business. Clogged pipes from hard water can eventually result in water damage, from the pipes bursting.

Water Damage

3/5/2018 (Permalink)

There are many types of ways water can cause damage.

Water has a way of getting places you never thought , and causing damage in ways you weren't expecting. When pipes burst and a home is flooded, or hit with a plumbing disaster (like a burst pipe), the situation can quickly get out of hand. There’s a reason why these incidents are among the most expensive problems a homeowner can face. Contaminated water not only creates immediate structural problems, it can leave serious biological threats behind after it has been removed.

Category three water is water that is grossly contaminated. It can cause severe illness or death if ingested.  It's sources include sewer backup, flooding, toilet overflow with feces, and stagnant liquid that has begun to support bacterial growth.

Dirty water is filled with all kinds of deadly substances, ranging from chemical residues to animal feces to parasites. Bacteria, viruses and fungi grow explosively in contaminated fluid, and severe health risks, like salmonella and hepatitis, are common in flood waters.

This problem is compounded by the composition of most homes, which are filled with organic materials. Drywall, wood and the matter that is trapped in carpet fibers are just a few examples, and they can give pathogens room to grow. Within 48 hours, mold may begin creeping behind the walls and releasing spores, and any organic materials that have been soaked through by contaminated fluid will usually have to be destroyed.

Fentanyl- It's In Your Community

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

Fentanyl is now being produced in illegal drug laboratories, and is 100 times more potent than morphine.

Fentanyl is the latest prescription drug abuse threat in our communities.

Fentanyl, when used legitimately, is a schedule II prescription drug and is typically used to manage pain after surgery.  It is similar to morphine, but attaches much more tightly to the opiate receptors in the body, so you need less of the drug to ease the same amount of pain.  This makes it much easier for a user to overdose on fentanyl.

Drug cartels have began producing fentanyl in illegal laboratories to sell pure or to mix with heroin.  Street names include Apache, China Girl, Dance Fever, Jackpot and Murder 8.

Illegal fentanyl producers are often using rental properties, hotel rooms, extended stay suites, and empty buildings to manufacture the lethal substance.

If you own or manage any of these properties, be aware of the signs of a potential fentanyl drug lab operation, including an unusual amount of white or colored powder on walls, floors; unusual thumping sounds that could indicate a pill press machine; odors - often a strong vinegar smell; reluctance to let landlords inspect the property.

If you suspect that there is a clandestine fentanyl laboratory, leave the area immediately and notify the police.

Arizona School Tax Credits

1/31/2017 (Permalink)

If you live and work in Mohave County, the state of Arizona offers some unique tax benefits for supporting our public schools.  There are five different tax credits that an eligible individual may claim.  For this blog, we will concentrate on the most common individual tax credit.

An individual may claim a credit for making contributions or paying fees to a public school for support of qualified activities or programs.  In 2016, single taxpayers can contribute up to $200.  For married taxpayers, the credit cannot exceed $400.

Your contribution reduces your state tax liability dollar for dollar, and goes directly to support qualifying programs and activities  Qualifying activities include sports, standardized testing fees for college credit, vocational education, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.

The wonderful aspect of this program is that your contribution is used locally.  Every dollar contributed supports the schools and activities in the community where you live.

This tax season, please remember your local schools and the children who attend them.

9/1/2016 (Permalink)

Boaters enjoying a vacation on beautiful Lake Havasu.

Labor Day weekend is generally considered the end of the Summer.  It's one last long weekend to enjoy the sun and the water before Autumn arrives.  If you plan on taking a trip away from home this Labor Day Weekend, there are several actions you can take to reduce your chance of having a serious water damage affect your home.

1)  Check all supply lines to major appliances for kinks or leaks, including washing machine hoses, ice maker lines, and the reverse osmosis system.

2)  Inspect the supply lines for serviceability at the toilets.

3)  Hire a plumber to inspect your pressure regulator before leaving town.  The peace of mind will be worth the cost.

3)  Turn the water off at the main

The roads, lakes and rivers are going to be busy this coming weekend.  Please be careful out there.

The Arizona Monsoon

8/9/2016 (Permalink)

Approaching Arizona Monsoon.

Monsoon season has arrived in Arizona.  Known variously as the Mexican monsoon, the Arizona monsoon or the Southwest monsoon, the season lasts in Arizona from June until the end of September.  During the monsoon season, the Arizona desert experiences high winds, dust storms, and severe downpours that often result in flash flooding.  Below are several safety tips to weather our summer storms.

  1. Do not attempt to cross flooded washes or roadways.  Even if the water looks shallow, there is often a layer of mud beneath the water's surface that can disable your vehicle.

  2. If driving while it’s raining, slow down.  The roads are very hazardous at the beginning of a downpour as oils and automotive fluids are washed off of the asphalt.  This creates unusually slippery conditions.

  3. Keep a safe distance from windows as high winds can blow heavy debris.

  4. Flood water is often highly contaminated.  If flood water intrudes into your home or business, call SERVPRO of Lake Havasu City/Bullhead City/Kingman to safeguard your health and home from the contaminants found in flood waters.
